The purpose of this course is to provide oral health care professionals with current information about the assessment, treatment and management of clients taking selected vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements. Specific course content will focus on current knowledge of the risks and benefits of supplements. Potential applications for supplement use in dentistry will be reviewed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this continuing education program, the dental professional will be able to:

• Discuss how herbal and dietary supplements are regulated in the United States.
• Discuss potential benefits and harms associated with use of vitamins and minerals.
• Discuss unique considerations for supplement use in special populations.
• Identify strategies to reduce risks when managing patients taking supplements.
• Discuss drug/dietary supplement interactions of significance to dentistry.
