In this age of patient-center care, the profession relationship between the patient and the oral healthcare professional is one of shared decision making. It is incumbent on the healthcare professional to inform the patient of the best evidence in order for them to best decided amongst competing options. Evidence-based medicine is the integration of individual clinical expertise with the best available research evidence from systematic research and the patient’s values and expectations. The principles of evidence-based medicine provide the tools to incorporate the best evidence into everyday practice. Evidence is considered to be amongst the best when it as has stood up to the test of being “ critically appraised“ along with other relevant scientific evidence pertinent to a specific clinical question. This presentation will review the process and skill set required of evidence-based clinical practice. Examples of current evidence and its application to clinical practice will be open for discussion.
